  • Writing - producing written Italian on everyday and professional topics

  • Speaking - demonstrating oral communication in everyday and professional contexts

How is the CILS B1 Exam scored?

Each section is scored independently and you must pass every section to pass the overall exam.

When are the CILS B1 Exam dates?

B1 Cittadinanza is offered at approved test centers worldwide six times per year. 2026 exam dates:

  • February 19

  • April 14

  • June 16

  • July 22

  • October 21

  • December 3

B1 Standard is offered twice per year - June 16 and December 3 only.

Test center availability varies by exam. B1 Standard has the widest global availability. B1 Cittadinanza can be found abroad but at fewer locations. Registration typically opens approximately two months before each exam date - check your local test center for their specific deadline.

Where can you take the CILS B1 Exam?

CILS exams are offered at approved test centers worldwide including Italian Cultural Institutes, authorized language schools, and directly at the University of Siena. Use the University of Siena's official test center locator to find the closest location to you.

How long does it take to prepare for the CILS B1?

Most English speakers need 4-6 months of consistent preparation if they already have basic Italian skills - solid understanding of present and past tenses and everyday vocabulary. If you are starting from scratch with no Italian, plan for significantly longer.

Studying 30 minutes per day consistently is more effective than cramming. The most common mistake is underestimating the communication structure section, which tests grammar in context rather than isolated rules.

How to prepare for the CILS B1 as an English speaker

Preparing for an Italian exam in Italian creates an obvious problem - you may misunderstand instructions, miss nuances in the scoring criteria, or waste time studying the wrong things.

Here is what works:

1. Study with English explanations. Understanding why an answer is correct - not just that it is correct - is what builds real exam confidence.

2. Practice with real past exams. The CILS B1 has consistent patterns. Past exams are the most reliable predictor of what you will see on test day.

3. Know the scoring rubric. Not every question on the exam has equal weighting. Understanding what questions matter most can greatly impact your score.

4. Start at least 4 months before your exam date. Last-minute preparation does not work for language exams.
