When I moved to Italy in 2024 with my family, I had a clear goal: pass the B1 exam to apply for citizenship. I didn’t speak Italian yet, but I was motivated. I tried everything. I took online courses designed for people who were already fluent. I went to expensive in-person language schools where, after spending nearly 1500€, I was told I was still at an A1 level.
I was shocked. With my background as a nationally board-certified ESL teacher and a graduate degree in education, I realized the problem wasn't me. It was the method. I didn't need perfect grammar. I needed a strategy. So I built a practical, self-paced system taught in English, focused only on what was required to pass. It worked. But as any immigrant knows, the B1 exam is just the first hurdle.
After I passed, I faced the next massive headache which was the Italian bureaucracy. Even with my certificate in hand, the actual application for citizenship by marriage was a maze of confusing websites and changing laws. That struggle is exactly why I wrote the Citizenship Application Guide, because passing the test shouldn't be the easy part.
Then came the car. It was actually my husband, Niko, who prompted the next evolution of Ready Set Italia. He watched friends and neighbors fail the Patente B (Driving License) theory exam over and over again. He pointed out that the barrier wasn't their driving skills. It was the tricky phrasing and technical jargon of the test. I realized that the same method I used for language exams could work for the driving test. We needed to decode the exam so you can get on the road.

Today, Ready Set Italia has grown from my personal study notes into a complete toolkit for living in Italy. Whether you are studying for your A2 or B1 language exams, preparing for the Patente B, or just trying to figure out which form to file for citizenship, my goal remains the same.
