Do you have to be an Italian citizen to get an Italian driver's license? Nope. So long as you can prove legal residency, you can take the exam.
Can I use my foreign driver's license in Italy? Yes and no. As a resident, you can drive with a foreign license accompanied by a court-approved Italian translation or an international driver's permit. After the first year, you must have an Italian driver's license.
Will Italy exchange my foreign license for an Italian license? Italy has an agreement with some countries (including all of the EU and the UK) to exchange driver's licenses. Most countries, however, do not have an agreement with Italy (including Canada, USA, and Australia).
I know how to drive. Do I have to go to driving school all over again? Not formal instruction in a classroom, no. Italy requires you pass the written theory exam, have several hours of supervised driving with a certified driving instructor, and pass a practical exam.
How many errors are allowed on the theory exam? You can make a maximum of 3 errors on 30 questions. With 4 or more errors, you fail and must retake the exam. The exam is 20 minutes, True/False format, and pulled from a 7,000+ question bank.
How long is the foglio rosa valid? The foglio rosa is valid for 12 months from the date you pass the theory exam. Within this time, you have 3 attempts to pass the practical driving test, with at least 1 month between attempts.
How many attempts do I get for the practical exam? You get 3 attempts within the 12-month validity of your foglio rosa. If you fail all 3 attempts or the foglio rosa expires, you can request riporto (one time only) to get a new foglio rosa without retaking the theory exam.
What happens if I fail the theory exam? You have 2 attempts within 6 months from your registration date. If you fail the first attempt, you can retake it after 1 month at no extra cost. If you fail both attempts, you must re-register and pay fees again.
How long does it take to get a Patente B? Minimum 2-3 months if you pass everything first try. You have 6 months from registration to pass the theory exam (2 attempts allowed). Once you pass theory, you get the foglio rosa valid for 12 months with 3 attempts at the practical exam. Total maximum timeline: 18 months (6 months theory + 12 months practical).
What are the mandatory guide hours? The law requires 6 hours minimum of professional driving instruction before taking the practical exam. These must include driving on autostrada, extraurbane roads, and in low-visibility conditions (night driving). However, the official law states 8 hours - but the digital tracking system isn't fully implemented yet, so autoscuole currently enforce only 6 hours. These cost €30-60 per hour.
Can I take the exam in English or only Italian? The exam must be taken in Italian - there is no English version available. The only exceptions are German (South Tyrol) and French (Valle d'Aosta) for residents of those regions.
