The Complete Italian Patente B Theory Test
Guide for English Speakers

Everything English speakers need to know about the Patente B theory test  - in one place.

What is the Italian Patente B Theory Test?

The Patente B is the Italian driving license. To get it, you must pass a theory test (esame di teoria) administered at motorization offices (Motorizzazione Civile) across Italy. The test is taken entirely in Italian - there is no official English version. This is the biggest challenge for English speakers, and the reason most fail on their first attempt.

Who needs the Patente B Theory Test?

If you are a non-EU resident living in Italy and cannot convert your foreign license to an Italian one, you must obtain a Patente B from scratch. This applies to Americans, Canadians, Australians, and citizens of most non-EU countries. You have 12 months from the date you establish Italian residency to pass the exam - after that, driving on your foreign license is illegal.

How does the Patente B Theory Test work?

The theory test consists of 30 true/false statements drawn from an official question bank of 7,147 questions. You have 20 minutes to complete the test. You are allowed a maximum of 3 errors - 4 or more errors means you fail. The exam is taken on a computer at your local Motorizzazione Civile office and is available Monday through Friday, excluding public holidays.

How is the Patente B Theory Test Scored?

The scoring is simple:

  • 30 questions, true or false

  • Maximum 3 errors allowed

  • 4 or more errors = fail

  • 0-3 errors = pass

Where can you take the Patente B Theory Test?

The Patente B theory test is only available in Italy. It is offered at every Motorizzazione Civile (motorization office) throughout the country, Monday through Friday excluding public holidays. There are no international testing sites - you must be physically present in Italy to take the exam.

How much does the Patente B Theory Test cost?

The theory test costs approximately €100, including the exam fee, medical certificates, and tax stamps. Note that obtaining the full Patente B also requires mandatory practical driving hours with a certified instructor - the theory test is just the first step

How to prepare for the Patente B Theory Test as an English speaker

The question bank is fixed - every question that could appear on your exam is already in the official 7,147 question database. This means there are no surprises if you prepare correctly.

Here is what works:

1. Study in English, test in Italian. The exam is in Italian but you can learn every question and its correct answer in English first - then recognize the Italian version on test day.

2. Master the full question bank. There is no shortcut. Every question in the bank is a potential exam question. Systematic study through the entire bank is the only reliable preparation method.

3. Practice until you reach 90% mastery consistently. The 3-error limit is strict. Aim to score zero errors in practice before you book your exam date.

4. Know your weak topics. The bank covers many topic areas. Track which topics you get wrong most often and focus your remaining study time there.
